Bidding for subsea transmission system project by ADNOC and ad power, subsea transmission and distribution
Gulf News reported on April 27, 2021 that Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Abu Dhabi power company (adpower) issued a joint bidding, and the bidding project is the first submarine transmission network project in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The joint project aims to develop and operate the first HVDC submarine transmission system (HVDC) in the Middle East and North Africa. This system uses the most advanced technology to connect ADNOC's offshore production facilities with adpower's onshore power grid. The system includes two independent submarine transmission links and converter stations, which will be connected to the onshore power grid operated by ad power's subsidiary, Abu Dhabi transmission and distribution company, The total installed capacity is 3200 MW..
This creative project is initiated by ADNOC. ADNOC and adpower will maintain an important long-term collaborative relationship in national infrastructure. At the same time, this relationship can also attract more international attention and cooperation for Abu Dhabi. In addition, this landmark project shows the commitment of the two entity companies to promote development and stabilize investment and value creation in Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates, as well as their support for the sustainable development of the national economy in this complex and challenging period.
The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions from ADNOC offshore facilities by 30% through adpower's efficient onshore power production. For ADNOC's offshore facilities, it also has the potential to optimize the power supply cost. It will use a variety of more efficient and environmentally sustainable energy sources, including renewable energy and nuclear energy, to replace the existing offshore gas turbine generators and improve the operation efficiency and system reliability.
The project also provides ADNOC with the potential to effectively utilize its rich natural gas resources (currently used to power offshore facilities) to achieve higher value, thereby generating additional revenue for ADNOC and Abu Dhabi.
Some international companies have received requests for cooperation between ADNOC and adpower on important infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi. The transmission system will include two independent submarine HVDC lines (HVDC) and converter stations, which will be connected to adpower's onshore power grid (operated by its subsidiary Abu Dhabi transmission and distribution company (Transco), with a total installed capacity of 3200 MW. It is expected to be put into commercial operation in 2025.
This major capital project will be funded by a designated institution jointly owned by ADNOC (30%), adpower (30%) and selected developers and investors (40%). The agency will carry out the construction, ownership, operation and transmission of the project. The successful bidder will develop and operate the transmission system together with ADNOC and adpower. After the completion of the transmission agreement, the whole project will be transferred to ADNOC.
